Regardless of how well a deck is constructed, rotten wood will weaken the structure. Carefully check along each piece of wood looking for rot, cracks, or any other sign of damage. Be especially careful to examine behind covering pieces: nailed/screwed together pieces should not easily separate by hand.

The ends of this beam were fully decomposed at the post to beam connection, but were concealed behind a short board splicing two beams. The initial appearance was acceptable however the splicing board easily pulled away by hand. This deck appeared sturdy (an expert will notice the increased joist deflection), the span of the joists were doubled. This was a collapse waiting to happen.
