The Positron Emission Tomography (PET) service housed at the Health Science Centre is a non-evasive method to take photos of cell activity in humans. It works by detecting a radioactive sugar, fluorodeoxyglucose, that is injected into a patient. The sugar concentrates in areas of elevated cellular activity. There are also other types of radioactive materials for other diagnostic purposes.
