To commemorate the 500th anniversary of John Cabot's 1497 voyage, a full-size replica of the Matthew was reconstructed at Bristol and it sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in 1997. That boat returned to England, and the Newfoundland government built a second which is now kept in Bonavista.
